There are many plants on the Famine Foods list that can be grown in America..... even if not Native. Check out http://perennialvegetables.org/ and buy the book. Check your zone and figure out what you can grow. Some are water garden plants like lotus and acorus and they look simply like ornamental plants. Jeruselum artichokes look like sunflowers. Malabar spinach is a pretty vine. Most people would never know they can be eaten.
